Odissi is also known as Orissi. Odissi is one of the oldest Indian classical dance which was originated from Odisha. Odissi stands out from all other Indian dances. Odissi give more importance to Tribhangi meaning three part break. Three parts are independent movement of head, chest and pelvis all upon the basic square stance known as Chauka symbolizes Lord Jagannath. This dance has various stances which involves foot work, different postures as seen in Indian temples. Odissi has been performed in the temples as offerings to Gods. The musical accompaniment that is used in Odissi is Hindustani sangeet. The instruments used are pakhawaj (also known as madal), bansuri (bamboo flute), the manjira (metal cymbals), the sitar and the tanpura.
